Life Brings Lessons

I’ve written and spoken about my childhood before––it wasn’t easy. One may think that I am where I am despite my circumstances, but really, I am where I am because it gave me self-reliance at an early age.

I figured out when I was nine who I couldn’t count on and who I could––me. I got a paper route and found adults who would guide me, from the neighbor repairing his lawnmower or working on his car to the paper route customers who would talk to me about school and give me life advice. I developed tenacity through each pedal push, paper tossed, and bill collected. I became a networker at a young age, knowing the value of connecting with people outside my bubble.

As an adult, I know that true growth happens when you stop looking outward at faults and release built up anger. It happens when you take ownership and make conscious decisions about what happens next in your life. As a boy, I was driven to do what I could to get out of that bubble. I knew I wanted something more, something different, but I didn’t have the words to articulate how to do it.

My path brought me all over the place, through good experiences and some challenging for sure. Life brings lessons after all. Over the years, I’ve learned about personal responsibility and am able to forgive myself for the mistakes I’ve made but also acknowledge the wins. My advice is to notice when you point fingers at others for a bad day or a bad situation. Turn that finger inward. What’s your part in it? What can you do bring change? Find a small step to begin and push yourself to move. After all, growth is the grand prize. 👨‍🚀
