Veterans Day & Four Important Promises

Next Tuesday, November 11, is Veterans Day, a day when we honor those of us that served in the Armed Forces. Decades ago, I took the Oath of Enlistment when I joined the Army, and that oath holds a lifetime commitment. It’s made up of four important promises:
1. Support and defend the Constitution, not any individual or party
2. Pledge loyalty to the Constitution with true faith and allegiance
3. Obey lawful orders from the President and officers of higher rank
4. Uphold military law
There are many parts of my military life that stayed with me––my need for order and lack of clutter, promptness, selfless service, and always having a sense of purpose, to name a few. But the connections I made, the life-altering experiences, and the belief in our Constitution are the most meaningful. Our Constitution is the world’s longest surviving written charter of government. In order to have survived that long, veterans stepped up with their lives, bodies, and minds during times of war and peace. I am grateful for the those that served before and after me. Whether a veteran, active service member, or civilian, the Constitution is our framework to live collectively and with a government that is “of the people, by the people, for the people.” 🇺🇸
