Helping Others

A black and white dog at the start of a large, corrugated metal tunnel watches a young child in a dark jacket and camouflage pants standing further inside, silhouetted by the bright light at the other end. The tunnel has a wooden walkway.

You may live a better, longer life from simply acting with intention, kindness, and generosity. Studies show helping others can reduce depression and increase self-esteem and confidence. It’s thought to lower blood pressure, reduce pain, and increase longevity. But it also gives you a sense of purpose and helps you feel connected to the people (or dogs 😉) around you. For me, it’s also a way to give back by paying it forward.

I say it all the time. I would not be where I am without the help of people that persistently believed in me. I was lucky to have them. But I didn’t just rely on their help. Being willing to go out and grab opportunity takes courage, awareness, and curiosity. It also takes gumption and mental discipline. My advice to people trying to find their way: believe in yourself, set bigger goals, find a mentor, and ask for help. And after someone acts with intention, kindness, and generosity towards you, be willing to pass that on to someone else. Not only will you feel better, but you’ll do better. And the light at the end of whatever tunnel you’re in becomes clear.
