Time Gets Me Running, Sometimes

Most of the time, I feel like I run my days. However, sometimes I find that my day is clearly running me. I’m sure most of you know what I mean.
I’ve built of habit of paying attention to my use of time. But some days are “nope, not today,” and I’m pulled in all different directions. I may have set goals of things I need to accomplish, but then something more urgent comes along or someone needs something from me.
Building a consistent routine helps, and I really try to protect my most productive hours––early morning. A University of California study shows that it takes 23-25 minutes to regain focus after being interrupted or switching tasks. That’s a huge chunk of time! Especially with compounded interruptions. I lose momentum, experience switch cost (brain expends energy during switches), and then the day is gone before I know it.
I haven’t found the absolute golden ticket to protect focused time, but I do find these things helpful to avoid the days when time gets me running:
1. Time-blocking
2. Touch it once strategy
3. Clear boundaries
4. Grouping tasks
Sometimes the day gets the best of me, but most days, I prevail. That’s a win that keeps me moving forward and onward!
💡 Pro tip: Walking meetings are a great way to combine work with things that make one feel better––exercise, increase of energy and focus, change of environment, and stress relief.
