Italy and the Brilliance of Thinking Big

Over my son’s spring break, Josie, Levi, and I went to Italy. Starting at Naples and working our way south, we had an amazing trip! I was so glad Levi had a chance to experience it. Of course, the food was amazing, and the historic sites were captivating. While Josie was into the art and history side of things, I kept marveling at the engineering and construction accomplishments of commercial structures that have lasted over 2,000 years.
If they could think that big, why would we think small? Given that NASA’s Artemis II mission just launched this week, I realize that humans continue to innovate, strive forward, and think big, but I ask that question more as a motivator. Over time and all over the world, human beings have created and continue to build commercial buildings that exceed expectations. Let’s not stop now!
The Romans used science and local resources to come up with a concrete mixture from volcanic ash. Its strong chemical bond makes it more durable than modern concrete. They were sophisticated in their engineering using treadwheel cranes (powered by human labor), compound pulley systems, along with iron wedges and tongs to lift very heavy stones. They created cumbersome material masterpieces from strategic human ingenuity. Now, we use technology to 3D print buildings! The human mind, with its strong propensity to figure it out, is a marvel. I left with way more questions than answers. I wonder, how many of us are thinking small? How many of us are really thinking big?
